Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art focusing largely on grappling and ground fighting. It focuses on the principles of leverage and proper technique to obtain dominant control on the ground, and provides a greater position to resolve conflict by using submission holds.
BJJ has been proven, when used properly, to be an effective method for dealing with bigger and stronger opponents and has become increasingly popular due in part to its great success in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). A student can train in BJJ for self defense, sport jiu-jitsu (and submission grappling) and mixed martial arts competition. It has found its way into the training regiment of nearly every successful martial artist worldwide.

BJJ FUNDAMENTALS CLASS
Coming into a martial arts academy can be intimidating for the beginning student. Our goal with the fundamentals class is to allow our students to learn jiu-jitsu by focusing on the controlled drilling of techniques without active sparring. The class also serves as a foundation for all students of BJJ, teaching the principles of the art and committing the core movements to muscle memory.
Our Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes start with Capoeira conditioning, with the remaining portion of the class comprised of self-defense, sport Jiu-Jitsu then live position training to end the class. Our Tuesday and Thursday classes are focused on drilling, self-defense, techniques, and sport Jiu-Jitsu. A key ingredient to our training is Cobra Chess training. We educate our students how to have better control with their techniques, preparing them for live training. Because of how we’ve formatted these classes in particular, it has helped prevent injuries for students, an increase in control with their techniques, and key factors in what separates us from other Jiu-Jitsu academies.
Our Intermediate class is focused on the combination of fundamental, intermediate and advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We have designed this class to begin with drilling, followed by Jiu-Jitsu techniques, expanding into the live position training. With this class, the instructor reinforces how we are here to have fun with our training, while leaving our ego outside the mat. Cobrinha likes to compare our egos with our shoes — Before we step on the mat, we leave our shoes outside the mat because our shoes are dirty. It is the same with our ego. If we bring our ego onto the mat, we are bringing the negative energy with us. If you bring the negative energy onto the mat, it is very difficult to learn what the instructor is teaching, and it can get you or your training partner hurt.
BJJ ADVANCED CLASS
For the student who is interested in competing in the sport, or if the student is just interested in testing his knowledge in a more practical setting, our advanced class offers World-class instruction. Eight-time World Champion, Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, passes on his knowledge in a structured setting, which includes high-intensity sparring to condition the body.
Our philosophy at Cobrinha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to make Champions on and off the mats. It’s easy to receive a Gold medal or become a World Champion in Jiu-Jitsu, so our idea is to make champions off the mats as well. It’s known that Jiu-Jitsu can be translated to the daily life. In Jiu-Jitsu, we learn how to solve our problems during the sparring sessions, solving one problem at a time, not letting our problems aggravate us; the same thing happens in lives – it’s applicable. Here’s an example: You’re driving your car and your car is making a small noise. If you don’t fix it, something else will start to make a noise, building up to more problems. Sooner or later, your car will stop working. When you start learning Jiu-Jitsu, you learn that solving one problem at a time can help you find peace, and the problems that used to build up or get you aggravated will no longer be a stress.
